Venice of the East

Alappuzha

Alappuzha, also known as Alleppey, is often referred to as the “Venice of the East.” It is a picturesque town located in the southern Indian state of Kerala. The comparison to Venice comes from its extensive network of canals, backwaters, and lagoons, which is reminiscent of the famous Italian city.

Alappuzha is renowned for its enchanting backwaters, which consist of a vast network of interconnecting canals, lakes, and rivers that are lined with palm trees and lush vegetation. These backwaters are a significant tourist attraction, and one of the best ways to explore them is by taking a houseboat cruise. Tourists can hire traditional Kerala houseboats, known as “kettuvallams,” which offer a unique and serene experience as they glide through the tranquil waters.

The scenic beauty of Alappuzha’s backwaters, combined with the local culture and traditional lifestyle of the people living along the waterways, makes it a popular destination for both domestic and international tourists. Additionally, Alappuzha is known for its annual Nehru Trophy Boat Race, where snake boat races are held on Punnamada Lake, attracting thousands of spectators.

Apart from the backwaters, Alappuzha also offers beautiful beaches, historic sites, temples, churches, and an array of other attractions that make it a fascinating place to visit in Kerala, often earning it the moniker “Venice of the East.”
