Vada Pav: Global Star

The Vada Pav, a renowned Indian snack celebrated for its delectable taste and straightforward recipe, has secured its place as one of the finest sandwiches globally.

In the bustling metropolis of Mumbai, where individuals strive tirelessly to carve their paths in their respective careers, street food reigns supreme as the go-to meal choice for many solo dwellers. When asked about their preferred breakfast fare, a significant portion of the populace vouches for Vada Pav, a quintessential Mumbai street snack cherished for its irresistible flavor and simplicity in preparation. For anyone who has wandered the streets of Mumbai, the sight of roadside vendors peddling Vada Pav in every corner is a common occurrence, not just within Maharashtra but also across various states nationwide.

From cricket maestro Rohit Sharma to Bollywood heartthrobs like Ranbir Kapoor and Shah Rukh Khan, numerous celebrities have openly professed their fondness for Vada Pav. Even the illustrious Badshah of Bollywood, Shah Rukh Khan, reminisced in an interview about his days of struggle when he relied on Vada Pav to quell his hunger pangs. This humble Indian delicacy has transcended borders, earning its rightful place among the “Best Sandwiches in the World.”

Recently, Taste Atlas, a reputable global travel guide renowned for its culinary expertise, unveiled its coveted list of the “50 Best Sandwiches in the World.” To the delight of Indian citizens, Vada Pav proudly clinched the 19th spot with an impressive rating of 4.3.

Tying for the top spot with a stellar rating of 4.6 are the Vietnamese Banh Mi and Turkish Tombik Doner sandwiches. Notable mentions in the top ten include the Lebanese Shawarma, Montreal Smoked Meat, and Lobster Rolls. Taste Atlas took to Instagram to share the list, inviting its followers to champion their favorite sandwiches.

When it comes to Vada Pav, it’s a marriage of two elements—a deep-fried vada crafted from flavorful mashed potatoes encased in a besan batter, paired with a soft bread bun known as pav. According to Taste Atlas, this iconic Indian snack traces its origins back to Ashok Vaidya, a visionary street vendor who operated near the Dadar railway station during the 1960s and 1970s. Vaidya conceptualized this affordable dish with the daily sustenance of laborers in mind, thereby etching his name in the annals of street food history.
