Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary

Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary, also known as the Vembanad Bird Sanctuary, is a renowned bird sanctuary located in the Kottayam district of the southern Indian state of Kerala. It is situated on the banks of Vembanad Lake, which is the largest freshwater lake in the state and a Ramsar wetland site of international importance.

The sanctuary was established in 1991 and covers an area of about 14 acres. It is a paradise for birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts, attracting migratory birds from different parts of the world, as well as local bird species. The best time to visit the sanctuary is from November to February when migratory birds flock to the region to escape the harsh winters of their native habitats.

Some of the commonly sighted migratory bird species at Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary include Siberian cranes, teal, egrets, darters, herons, and many others. The lush greenery, serene backwaters, and diverse avian population make it a popular eco-tourism destination in Kerala.

Visitors to the sanctuary can explore the area through boat rides and guided tours, providing ample opportunities to observe and photograph the beautiful birds in their natural habitat. The sanctuary also offers eco-friendly accommodation options, ensuring tourists can have an immersive experience in the lap of nature.

Apart from birdwatching, tourists can indulge in other activities like fishing, canoeing, and exploring nearby attractions such as Kumarakom village, the Kumarakom Backwaters, and the Aruvikkuzhi Waterfalls.

Before planning a visit, it’s always a good idea to check the current status and details of the Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary for the most accurate and up-to-date information.
