History Of Kerala Lottery
Kerala is the first state to start a lottery in India. P.K. The lottery starts when Mr. PK Kunj becomes the finance minister. It first Kerala Lottery went on sale on 1 November 1967. The first polling took place on January 26, 1968. The first lottery tickets were in the names of Maveli, Kairali, and Periyar. Saidu Mohammed was the founder and director.
Lottery Directorate was formed in Kerala in September 1967. The Directorate started functioning on 1st September. In the same year, the state government released the first lottery ticket on November 1, Kerala’s birthday.
The first lottery was released with a face value of one rupee and a first prize of half a lakh rupees or fifty thousand rupees. Apart from this, there were 93 cash prizes. It was printed in the lottery itself.
The draw was held two months after the lottery was released. The draw of the first lottery launched by the Kerala government was on 26th January 1968 on Republic Day. In the center of the first lottery, a picture of a surgery table was given in connection with the scene of emergency care.
Lottery ticket sales were not until the day of the draw as they are today. The lottery closed 16 days earlier, on January 10, 1968. A notice was given on the ticket itself that the sale of the lottery would be closed on 10-01-1968. The closing date was written and printed.
In July 1968, the lucky fare on the ticket increased. The first prize has been increased from Rs.50,000 to Rs.75,000. On November 1, 1968, the first birthday of the lottery, the prize money was again increased to Rs 1 lakh.
The total income on that day was Rs.20 lakhs. Fourteen lakhs profit out of it. Today, this dream sale of the government has crossed the lakhs and has turned into a profit of crores. Only two times in the past Thursday have lottery sales and revenue declined.
2020-2021 and 2010-2011 are the two years with the lowest revenue. Daily lottery sales increased from 90 lakhs in 2016 to 1.02 crores in 2019-20.
According to government figures, the revenue has increased from Rs 6,317.71 crore in 2015-16 to Rs 9,972.09 crore in 2019-20. From April 2019 to January 2020, a turnover of Rs 8516 crore was generated through the state lottery. 1277 crores of this is a profit of Rs. 511 crores in SGST revenue during this period, according to legislative documents. This is the figure up to just before the spread of Covid and the lockdown.
In 2008-09, the state government’s profit from lottery tickets crossed triple digits. In the years since then, profits have returned to double digits only once. That was in 2010-11. 92 crores in profit as against 114 crores in the previous year (2009-10). This reduction was due to the ruling on the ban on the lottery.
But the next year there was a huge jump in the sale of lottery tickets. 92 crore rose to Rs 324 crore. Revenue through lottery was just Rs 20 lakhs in 1967 but today it has become crores.
But luck did not help Finance Minister PK Kunj, who gave lucky dreams and good luck to the Malayalees by casting the lottery. He became an MLA for the second time in 1967 and became the Finance Minister in the second EMS government. However, neither the government nor the finance minister had the luck to complete the term. PK Kunj, who took over as Finance Minister in March 1967, had to resign in March 1969.
