Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary

Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary is a protected area located in the Idukki district of the Indian state of Kerala. Established in 1984, it is one of the 12 wildlife sanctuaries in Kerala and covers an area of approximately 90 square kilometers.

The sanctuary is situated on the Western Ghats, a mountain range known for its rich biodiversity and unique ecosystem. Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary is characterized by its diverse landscapes, including deciduous forests, thorny scrub forests, grasslands, and rocky terrain. The region’s geography and climate provide a habitat for various species of plants and animals.

Some of the notable wildlife species found in Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary include Indian elephants, gaur (Indian bison), sambar deer, spotted deer, langurs, bonnet macaques, Indian porcupines, and various species of reptiles and birds. The sanctuary is also known for its population of the endangered Grizzled Giant Squirrel (Ratufa macroura).

Apart from its diverse wildlife, Chinnar is renowned for the medicinal plants found in the region. The sanctuary is home to several rare and endangered medicinal plants used in traditional Ayurvedic medicine.

Visitors to the sanctuary can engage in activities such as guided nature walks, trekking, and wildlife watching. However, park management emphasizes responsible ecotourism to minimize human impact on the delicate ecosystem.

Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary serves as an essential corridor for wildlife movement between the neighboring states of Kerala and Tamil Nadu. This corridor facilitates gene flow and contributes to the overall conservation of biodiversity in the Western Ghats region.

Conservation efforts, along with community involvement and awareness, play a crucial role in preserving the natural heritage of Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary for future generations.
